CHA President’s Statement on Colorado Court of Appeals Decision in CRNA Supervision Case

Date July 19, 2012

Greenwood Village, Colo. (July 19, 2012) — Colorado Hospital Association (CHA) President and Chief
Executive Officer Steven J. Summer made the following statement regarding today’s Colorado Court of
Appeals decision in Case 11CA1005, regarding certified registered nurse anesthetists administering anesthesia
without physician supervision:

“We are pleased with the court's decision today. This ruling reaffirms the importance of properly trained nonphysician providers being allowed to provide critical health care services in rural parts of Colorado, thus
enabling greater access to health care for our citizens. As the health care delivery system continues to evolve in this era of reform, the increase in the number of Coloradans with coverage will result in a need to utilize appropriately educated, experienced and licensed non-physician providers to meet the growing demand for health care services. Such providers, including advanced practice nurses and others, are needed to help fill a substantial gap in health care access in underserved regions of our state, and the court has affirmed their right to do so.”
