Vail Health – Workforce Wellbeing Program

To increase employee retention and engagement, decrease employee burnout, and improve employees’ overall sense of wellbeing, Vail Health launched a new Workforce Wellbeing Program (WWP). The WWP was also implemented to enhance the patient’s experience while at Vail Health.

The goals and objectives of Vail Health’s WWP include the following:

    • Provide organizational initiatives that promote work/life balance.
    • Recognize staff for their achievements in community service, patient advocacy, and population health spaces.
    • Host events that celebrate staff and organizational accomplishments.

The WWP includes programs such as the Zen Den, which features newly created staff wellness rooms complete with massage chairs, aromatherapy, meditation, yoga, and sound healing stations. Wellness rooms are in each key area and staff can sign up for 30-minute increments. Additionally, Vail Health offered a $1,000 wellness credit, which can be used by staff to purchase ski passes, enroll in fitness/gym programs, or purchase bicycles or running shoes. Vail Health also offered an employee wellbeing program that includes an app to track fitness, nutrition, financial and emotional wellbeing, as well as an opportunity to earn discounts on health insurance premiums. Lastly, Vail Health chose to allow unlimited number of visits to their Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for both employees and their dependents.

    WWP successes include the following:

    • Wellness rooms are fully utilized daily.
    • Seventy percent of staff participated in the wellness app and received the health insurance premium discount.
    • A thirty percent increase in EAP utilization.
    • Five percent increase in employee engagement measures.
    • Vail Health is now in the top quartile of organizations for overall employee engagement.
