Advent Health Littleton – NICU Clinical Operations Group
AdventHealth Littleton operates a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to provide advanced, specialized, and compassionate care to the smallest of patients. Realizing that many experts from a variety of specialties and departments must work together as a coordinated team to provide this high level of care, the NICU Clinical Operations Group (NCOG) was created.
The group consists of representatives from neonatology, nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, imaging, physical therapy, occupational therapy, lab, speech language pathology, and infection prevention who come together with one goal in mind: to improve whole-person, overall care for NICU infants.
Evidence of the group’s success includes the following:
- Decreased central line days
- Changes to the use of antibiotics
- Use of nitric oxide to support infant oxygen levels
- Implementation of a NICU rapid response team with direct pharmacy involvement
- Less invasive surfactant administration not requiring intubation
- Decrease in infant pressure injuries related to CPAP masks
- Placement of heart monitors in the baby warmers for improved assessment and temperature regulation
- Equipment to support safe transfers of newborns with respiratory problems to the NICU
- Increased presence of and collaboration with physical, occupational, and speech therapy
