AdventHealth Avista – Post-birth Alert Bracelet Program
In the United States, approximately 700 women die from pregnancy-related complications each year, with over 60 percent of these deaths being preventable. To reduce post-birth complications and death, AdventHeath Avista launched the Post-Birth Bracelet Program (PBBP) for all patients in March 2025.
At discharge, all birthing patients are given an orange bracelet that reads “Post-Birth Alert,” and patients are encouraged to wear the bracelet for six to twelve weeks after giving birth. The bracelet alerts health care providers that the patient recently gave birth if additional medical/emergency care is needed. Birthing patients also receive educational materials on emergency signs and symptoms and when to seek additional care.
Although the program is still in its infancy, initial successes include the following:
- Patients are better equipped to recognize when to seek medical care after childbirth.
- Health care providers value the alert bracelets for helping them deliver appropriate post-birth care.
