HCA HealthONE Rose – Decreasing Postpartum Hemorrhage Rates
HCA HealthONE Rose had a vision to improve patient outcomes by decreasing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) rates to less than 3 percent monthly. As a component of this vision, the hospital also implemented a weekly, interdisciplinary review of quality metrics to include PPH rates. Additionally, specific strategies were developed to identify patients at risk for PPH and to improve staff response to minimize the amount of blood loss for these patients.
Successes include the following:
- Reduced PPH rate from 4.16 percent in 2022 to 2.66 percent in 2023
- In response to increasing PPH rates, implemented a weekly interdisciplinary quality review committee, consisting of the CMO, nursing and quality leaders to review all PPH cases
- Any PPH case noting a 1,500 ml or greater blood loss is reviewed by OBGYN peer review
- Developed a PPH alert for nurses to use to notify the care team on any delivery seeing an increase in bleeding, allowing the care team to respond timely and the registered nurse to give uninterrupted patient care
