Intermountain Health – Bloom Perinatal Behavioral Health Program
Intermountain Health had a vision to protect the health and well-being of birthing patients and infants through increased access to mental health care and the reduction of stigma related to maternal mental health. As a result, the Bloom Perinatal Behavioral Health Program (PBHP) was founded.
PBHP provides care for birthing patients, infants, and families, from pregnancy and up to one year postpartum, through the development of a continuum of maternal mental health interventions across provider types, from OB clinics to hospital inpatient and neonatal intensive care unit. A component of this program includes the implementation of a universal mental health screening tool and a robust staff education program. New partnerships were forged with community-based and other health care organizations to improve support services for women managing a variety of mental health and social determinants of health challenges.
Successes include the following:
- More than 10,000 women were screened for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders in the inpatient and outpatient settings, demonstrating a 94 percent screening success rate
- Received more than 1,400 referrals for maternal mental health services and support based on the inpatient and outpatient screens
- Referred patients received education or counseling services from either the Bloom program, which is integrated within their medical care, or were referred to a reliable community-based pathway for services specific to maternal mental health
- Four Intermountain Health hospitals and 15 obstetric clinics adopted the program’s screening and referral services model as the standard of care
