Intermountain Health – Bloom Perinatal Behavioral Health Program

Intermountain Health had a vision to protect the health and well-being of birthing patients and infants through increased access to mental health care and the reduction of stigma related to maternal mental health. As a result, the Bloom Perinatal Behavioral Health Program (PBHP) was founded.

PBHP provides care for birthing patients, infants, and families, from pregnancy and up to one year postpartum, through the development of a continuum of maternal mental health interventions across provider types, from OB clinics to hospital inpatient and neonatal intensive care unit. A component of this program includes the implementation of a universal mental health screening tool and a robust staff education program. New partnerships were forged with community-based and other health care organizations to improve support services for women managing a variety of mental health and social determinants of health challenges.

    Successes include the following:

    • More than 10,000 women were screened for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders in the inpatient and outpatient settings, demonstrating a 94 percent screening success rate
    • Received more than 1,400 referrals for maternal mental health services and support based on the inpatient and outpatient screens
    • Referred patients received education or counseling services from either the Bloom program, which is integrated within their medical care, or were referred to a reliable community-based pathway for services specific to maternal mental health
    • Four Intermountain Health hospitals and 15 obstetric clinics adopted the program’s screening and referral services model as the standard of care

To learn more about this program, please contact Heather Hagenson, director of operations and business development, at [email protected].
