UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital – Broset Violence Checklist
As workplace violence continues to be a concern in hospitals across the country, University of Colorado Hospital sought a screening tool that could assist staff in the early detection and prediction of imminent violent behavior in hospitalized patients. University of Colorado Hospital identified, implemented, and validated the use of the Broset Violence Checklist for medical-surgical acute care patients, which is used worldwide and had been proven to identify patients in the Emergency Department and acute psychiatric areas who are at risk for physical violence, to proactively mitigate the risk for workplace violence events.
UCHealth implemented the use of the BVC and incorporated it as a screening tool/assessment in the electronic health record and established policies and resources to support employees in utilizing the BVC and in preventing and mitigating events of WPV.
The BVC program enjoyed several successes to include:
- Significant improvement in staff satisfaction and sense of support and safety
- The BVC pilot identified underreporting of WPV events
- Continued utilization of the BVC increased the number of physical events reported daily
- BVC use was also implemented in acute inpatient medical/surgical unit
